Back in 1980 Games Workshop released a boxed game; Valley of the Four Winds.
'An Epic Game of Sword & Sorcery', the background had been featured in White Dwarf magazine from issue 8 onwards......Miniature Figurines Ltd released a mind blowing array of Boschesque sculpts. They had suddenly moved away from a more staid wargaming style of sculpting into the forefront of fantasy. Some of my own favorites have always been the Swamp Lords - I even managed to half paint a set all those years back.....Minifigs are slowly re-releasing pieces from the range including a few of the Swamp Lords. They have a few other older ranges to pick from here. Dave at Caliver Books who owns Minifigs now, has commissioned new sculpts in the same style for their new Great War of the Worlds range.
These top 2 pics are directly off the Minifigs site, purely to lead you in.........
The rest of the Swamp Lords are below - excuse my unfinished 35 year old
paint jobs......
As always contact me on enquiries@deartonyblair.co.uk regarding trades and such like....

Never seen that game or figures but I only got into gaming in the 80's.
Thanks for sharing
Peace James
I have a few old Minifig fantasy figures, but none as good as these. They look evil!
They're surprisingly good. My old Minifig fantasy figures are very boring in comparison.
My favourite range ever, as you say based on Bosch's paintings and Breughel's Triumph of Death (ahhh, Black Sabbath had that on one of there album covers) I only need a few more figures to complete the set. If only Dave Ryan would stop teasing and release the whole lot again. A very good boardgame too I remember.
Nice Stuff Dave, can you remember which other games GW did at the same time?
Warlock , which Bob Connor wrote, and Apocalypse, spring to mind but there was another wasn't there?
I sold those Minifigs ranges back in the late 70s / early 80s, underrated at the time. Some of them were modelled on Rodney Mathews posters such as The People of the Pines (Moorcock) and spiky goblinoids (before Citadel did them). I even did a couple miniatures when starting out inspired by the 'Rolling Stones' (alledgedly) as fantasy warriors which were cast by Bob Connor at Tabletop Games:

BoardGameGeek is the place to go to find out about, well, what it says. It has a massive database. This is the GW Games listing: http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamepublisher/26/games-workshop-ltd
Hi Pete - Doctor Who was the 4th one I think.
Hi Paul, the VFW range was incredible. A lot of the Aureolo Rococo range took the Rodney Matthews ideas - I still have a horde of the Elven 'People of the Pines' cavalry waiting to be painted as always. And how doI get hold of those Stomes' minis!!!
David - I've only got the two post-casting masters and one casting left and I'm currently selling them as part of my entire collection to a collector.
Don't know what happened to all the moulds that Bob at TTG had, but they should be in amongst them...
Doctor Who!
of course...
I bet that fetches big money now...
Not sure about the Dr Who boardgame price - I got one in a charity shop for a few quid recently.
Here's the BGG entry:

Haven't had a decent charity shop find for a long time :(
Great stuff, Really inspiring :-) I'm also a huge fan of Rodney Mathews art. Might have a go at sculpting some People of the Pines or spiky goblins:-)
George
Great miniatures. I'm still waiting for the The Great Bell & Tower myself.
